Medical Places at Gippsland

The Commonwealth Government has accepted Monash University's offer to train doctors here at Monash University Gippsland Campus.

By Monash University Gippsland - 10th April 2006 - Back to News

Starting in 2008, Monash University Gippsland will have 40 Commonwealth-supported places to do their part in helping address the rural doctor shortage in Gippsland and regional Australia. The Commonwealth and State governments will also be providing the Campus with $10 million to fund facilities and equipment for the new school on the Campus.

As well as the infrastructure and prestige the program will provide, the graduate entry medical program will attract more students and researchers to come to study and work here, making the Gippsland campus even more of a major university presence in the region. Our intention is to grow that number of places, both with more Commonwealth supported and full fee paying places over time.

Our successful bid was the result of hard work from many people on the Campus, but also within the general community and the greater Monash community. I can't possibly thank everyone without running the risk of forgetting someone's contributions, but of particular note, I believe we owe a debt of gratitude to our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins, who originally proposed the initiative, and to the Hon. Peter McGauran, our local member as well as the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, who worked incredibly hard in Canberra to make it happen.

The announcement of the medical places was part of a larger announcement made by the Prime Minister this past weekend. He indicated that the Commonwealth will invest around $250 million over four years to train more doctors and nurses. In total, the Commonwealth will fund 400 new medical school places a year, with some of the new places commencing in 2007 and the full 400 available by 2009.

This is an exceptional achievement, and a truly incredible time to be part of the Gippsland Campus.
