A birthday booster for your four year oldWhen all the candles have been blown out, the cake demolished, the last little friend gone and the sticky finger marks wiped up, it’s time to book your four year old in for their booster vaccines. By Latrobe City Council - 9th October 2006 - Back to News October is Immunisation Month, and Latrobe City’s manager health services, Andrew Mackintosh said that there were two vaccinations to be administered at this stage in the child’s life. "The first vaccine will protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio; and the second vaccine is for measles, mumps and rubella."
"However, since meningococcal C immunisation was introduced two years ago, some children between the ages of two and four may have missed this vaccination, and parents are encouraged to arrange this at the same time," Mr Mackintosh added.
"As well as ensuring that your child remains protected against these diseases, it is important to have these vaccines at the fourth birthday for inclusion on the school entry immunisation certificate. This is a legal requirement when enrolling your child for school, usually done by August each year," Mr Mackintosh explained.
"The certificate will show immunisation as incomplete if these boosters are delayed, and could subsequently complicate enrolment procedures for your child," Mr Mackintosh added.
Mr Mackintosh stated that councils no longer produce the school entry certificates which are now issued centrally by the Australian Children’s Immunisation Register (ACIR). "The advantage of this register is that your child’s immunisation records are accessible from anywhere in Australia should your child change schools," Mr Mackintosh concluded.
Four year old booster vaccinations are free of charge through council. Please telephone 1300 367 700 for further information and session details.
