Gippsland Firefighters Assist At Fire Near Horsham

Gippsland has sent some expert firefighters to help fight the 8500 hectare blaze near Horsham in the south west of the state.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 12th January 2005 - Back to News

At short notice at 5.00am this morning, 42 Department of Sustainability (DSE), Parks Victoria, Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and VicForests staff and crew were dispatched to Horsham.

These personnel are from Traralgon, Noojee, Erica, Heyfield, Yarram and Bairnsdale.

Regional Fire Manager David Tainsh said that if the fire proves difficult to control, the deployment of Gippsland staff could be for five to seven days.

"Everyone who has been deployed to this fire and those involved in coordinating the effort early this morning should be acknowledged for their cooperation and responsiveness to the operation," Mr Tainsh said.

"While we are assisting the South West region to fight this fire, there will still be a high level of resources available for any fires that we may have in our own region, given the current weather conditions."
