Dr Nicola Watts addressed a group of business leaders and spoke of the important links between an organization’s capacity to innovate and solve problems, and its broader leadership capabilities. She highlighted the different generations of innovation that regional organisations are increasingly required to grapple with, ranging from finding innovative solutions to internal productivity and technology challenges to those linked to broader global challenges such as climate change and sustaining vibrant regional communities in the face of global economic change. She then challenged the group to consider the extent to which their organisations are developing leadership capabilities that are in line with addressing those challenges.

Dr Watts said, "Total Leadership is about leading for the 21st century and not the 20th century’, she continued, "There are a number of key principles associated with the concept of ‘Total Leadership’, but one of them is about developing leadership at all levels. We need to get away from the idea that leadership is about a position held; rather it is a way of thinking, believing, and behaving that is required at all levels of organisations. Total leadership is essential if we are to tap most effectively into the full creative potential of the people in our organizations, and not only ensure healthy organisations but also a healthy and prosperous future." She reinforced that there are great examples of the capacity of Gippsland organisations to innovate, but also cautioned that there were also examples of 20th century management and leadership concepts and practices that were often still at work. These could be acting as barriers to organisations achieving the full potential to innovate effectively.

Dr Nicola Watts is a Gippslander who has extensive experience in the international telecoms sector, and regularly facilitates leadership development programs. Her talk combined her own experiences and research with that of Leadership Management Australia and its affiliate international organisation Leadership Management International.
