V8 Supercars

Race enthusiasts and Bass Coast residents have the opportunity to get up close to V8 Supercars during the event on the weekend.

Cars that will be racing in the Phillip Island round of the Championship, the L&H 500, on 16 to18 September, will be in Cowes before the event, along with support category drivers. Bass Coast Shire Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the drivers would be in Cowes signing autographs and talking to fans on Thursday, 15 September.

"This is another opportunity for the community to be involved with the V8 Supercar event and meet racing personalities off the track," said Mr Angarane. "Most people don’t get the opportunity to get up close to high powered racing vehicles, so it’s a great opportunity to come down and see what it’s all about.

"An area in Thompson Avenue will be set aside to accommodate V8 Supercar, drivers and other Support Category vehicles from the Carrera Cup, Aussie Racing Car and Formula Ford categories. The vehicles will be set up around Pino’s Trattoria from 5.00pm. Traffic will be restricted in the immediate area to accommodate the vehicles and for the safety of the public in that area.

"Crowd numbers will dictate the level of traffic management required. If road closures are required they will kept to the immediate area to minimise the disruption to traffic," continued Mr Angarane.

Entertainment is planned in the evening on Saturday, 17 September with local bands Electric Ant and Vampire Boogie performing at the bottom of Thompson Avenue. Bass Coast residents are encouraged to come, enjoy some free entertainment and enjoy the atmosphere of the event.

Parking and Traffic
With good weather expected and strong interest in the L&H500 event, up to 60,000 people are expected to attend over the three days. Improvements at the circuit should make it easier to get around and more enjoyable for anyone attending. It is also expected that all race goer vehicles will be accommodated on and adjacent to the circuit.

Given the expected numbers, a significant traffic management operation will be in place on Sunday afternoon to help clear traffic from the circuit:
• Back Beach Road will operate one way only from approximately 4.00pm until traffic has cleared at around 6.30 pm.
• A Blue Line operation will be in place on the Phillip Island Road between Back Beach Road and the Anderson Roundabout during this period.

"Shuttle bus services will run from Cowes, San Remo and around the Island and we encourage people to use this," explained Mr Angarane.
"Children under 15 accompanying adult race goers will travel free of charge on the Shuttle Bus service.

"Community Safety staff will be on hand to ensure that people are parking legally. Illegal parkers and spectators outside the circuit can cause a disruption to traffic and create issues with safety.

"As always, we want to make sure that everyone is aware of the peak times for traffic so they can avoid the area," advised Mr Angarane.
"It will certainly help the rest of the community if they plan their trip to avoid the heaviest traffic. If that is not possible, people should allow extra travel time."
