Ingram welcomes extra water for Snowy River

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the State Government’s announcement of a major water saving project for the Snowy River in the Water White Paper, released today.

By Craig Ingram - 23rd June 2004 - Back to News

"The decommissioning of Lake Mokoan will provide 20,000 megalitres of water savings for the Snowy River, without impacting on irrigation entitlements," Mr Ingram said.

"This is by far the largest water savings project that has been undertaken to return environmental flows to the Snowy River.

"While this project may generate some local opposition, I congratulate the government on taking the hard, but correct decision.

"We cannot continue to maintain inefficient and wasteful water infrastructure and Lake Mokoan had water evaporation and losses in the order of 60,000 megalitres per annum.

"Protecting natural eco-systems should always come before maintaining obsolete and inefficient systems.

"The project will not only benefit the Snowy River, but will also provide 24,000 megalitres of environmental flows to the Murray River and is expected to have a significant, positive impact on the Broken and Goulburn River systems.

"I will comment further on the announcements in the White Paper when I have a chance to examine it in more detail," Mr Ingram concluded.
