Staff Work Round The Clock To Maintain Water Supply For Bairnsdale

East Gippsland Water staff and contractors have worked round the clock for two days to carry out essential repairs to the main water supply pipeline into Bairnsdale, under very challenging conditions.

By Gippsland Water - 4th June 2012 - Back to News

A notable leak was discovered at one end of a steel section of the major pipeline running under the Mitchell River, by Lind Bridge in Wy Yung. The leak was traced to a welded joint in the pipeline, below the river level and at the edge of the bank.

The challenge was to excavate and repair the difficult-to-access pipe, while also maintaining uninterrupted drinking water supplies to some 10,000 customers.

First, an alternative bypass pipeline was brought into operation for the duration of the repair to supply drinking water to Bairnsdale. This enabled the problem water main to be temporarily taken out of service. The work crew were then able to concentrate on fully exposing the area to be repaired and to reweld the affected joint. This required constant pumping of river water from the immediate area.

Said East Gippsland Water's Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "The success of this project is down to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved to address a number of challenges.

"Working round the clock, they not only successfully repaired the leak, safely and effectively, but ensured the water supply to thousands of customers was uninterrupted.

"The refilling of the pipeline after the repair was initiated last night and some customers may have experienced low water pressure. We apologise for any inconvenience experienced."
