Gippsland Storm Media Release

Last Saturday afternoon, the players, supporters, and sponsors of the local Rugby League team gathered at the Nova Lounge Traralgon for the presentation of awards.

During the course of the afternoon, highlights of the year, and past years were shown on the big screen, and the votes were counted to determine this years Best and Fairest Player. With the up and down season experienced by the Gippsland Storm, consistency was always going to determine the winners. With many players managing only a handful of games for various reasons, the count was always going to be a 4 or 5 horse race, and as it turned out, the results reflected this.

There were no real surprises when Whitney Hiriaki was announced the winner receiving 41 votes. In a wonderful season by him, winning the Players Player Cup backed up his Best and Fairest award, and representing the Victorian Under 18 team held in Sydney early August.

Runners up went to stand in Coach and Captain of the team, Jared Hiriaki receiving 34 votes. In another very strong year from the lad, injury may well have prevented him from taking the title from his brother, and one would assume that it wont be too long before he takes the major prize. Hiriaki also clinched the Top Try Scorer Award.

The Evergreen Mick Crowe rounded out the place getters with 17 votes, and like the others, had a very strong and consistent year. In what is deemed a young mans game, this fellow keeps going and going and going, completing now his 13th year in the game by my count, and this was preceded by some years of Rugby Union for Morwell. And there are no signs of stopping either, vowing to pull the boots on again in 2005.

Other awards presented included Rookie of the Year who went to Brad VanHeurck after having an outstanding season. If seriously pursued, Brad has potential in attaining State level. Alan Choy received the Coach Award having vastly improved since putting the boots on three years ago, displaying commitment and courage each week.

The AGM for Gippsland Rugby League will be held on Sunday, 17th October at the Berry Street, Traralgon at 2pm.
