Free herbicide to eliminate weeds

Property owners in Latrobe City with native vegetation on their land, together with unwanted weeds are being encouraged to apply for free herbicide packs available through funds from a second generation Landcare grant.

By Latrobe City Council - 5th September 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Pest Plant Controller, Peter Steller, said that landholders were entitled to apply for a free 200g or 40g satchel of a Metsulfuron-based herbicide and wetter while funds are still available.

"Metsulfuron is a selective chemical that can be used to kill most broad-leaf weeds. A voucher for a 40g or 200g pack will be issued to people who have retained or replaced the indigenous flora on their properties to assist with the control of weeds such as Blackberry and Ragwort. A 40g pack will make approximately 200 litres of herbicide mix," Mr Steller explained.

"Bushland areas are themselves a significant deterrent to weed infestation, as the competition for sunlight, nutrients and water is high. More importantly, a number of potentially serious weeds that threaten agricultural land simply will not grow in bushland situations," Mr Steller said.

"However, weeds can still present a problem on properties and everyone is invited to apply for the herbicide. Priority will be given to properties which contain remnant native vegetation with the highest conservation value. Successful applicants will also need to agree to initial and follow-up site inspections to ensure weeds are continually being treated," Mr Steller added.

If you would like to apply for the free herbicide or would like more information, please contact Peter Steller at Latrobe City on 1300 367 700. An application form will be mailed out to you.
