Help Planet Ark celebrate planting our 10 millionth tree!

Calling all green thumbs! Planet Ark is calling on schools, community groups and individuals in Baw Baw Shire to get down and dirty and help it plant National Tree Day’s 10 millionth tree.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 17th July 2006 - Back to News

Last year, 350,000 volunteers planted over 1.5 million native trees at more than 4,000 sites.

This year’s ‘National Tree Day’ is being celebrated throughout West Gippsland on Friday 28th July – School’s Tree Day at Buln Buln Primary School with Springsure Hill Landcare Group, Neerim South Secondary School with Neerim and District Landcare Group, and Marist-Sion with Camp Hill Landcare Group.

Other school’s Tree Day registered sites will be at Jindivick, Nayook, Ripplebrook and Warragul Primary Schools.

National Tree Day sites on Sunday 30th July are Dawson’s Track with the Springsure Hill Landcare Group and Buln Buln Recreation Reserve with the Reserve’s Grounds Committee.

Local organisers Bridgette McCallum and Carolyn Ferguson of West Gippsland Landcare Network and Baw Baw Shire Council, encourage volunteers to join in and help out on the day.

"Planting native trees in West Gippsland not only beautifies our area, but it also helps the environment and is a great day out for our community," said Bridgette McCallum.

This year, 3000 trees will be planted at the various sites with the aim of linking wildlife corridors, stabilising banks and beautifying the area.

National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in association with Toyota and AMP Foundation. This year’s National Tree Day falls on Sunday 30th July with Schools Tree Day taking place on Friday 28th July.

For planting times at your local National Tree Day site please contact Bridgette or Carolyn. Volunteers should bring gloves, a hat, wear sunscreen or wet weather gear.

If you’d like to volunteer or register your own site, please call the Planet Ark Tree Day Hotline on 1300 88 5000 or go to planetark.com/treeday.
