Council Warns - One Car Only In Each Disabled Parking Bay

Latrobe City Council has reminded users of disabled parking bays that the special sized bays may only contain one vehicle.

The reminder follows a number of concerns from people who use mobility aids and need the extra-width provided in disabled parking bays to transfer between their vehicle and their mobility aid such as a wheelchair.

Latrobe City’s disability support officer, Karleen Plunkett, said a number of instances have occurred where residents with mobility aids have returned to their car to find another vehicle with a disabled car label squeezed alongside them in the bay, preventing them from getting back into their own vehicle.

"The current Australian Standard width of a disabled parking bay is 3.2m and is only for one vehicle. This width is to allow people who use a wheelchair or mobility aid enough room to get in and out of their vehicle safely within the designated bay area," Ms Plunkett said.

"The road rules in Victoria state that a parking bay is for the use of a single vehicle at any one time. Penalties can apply to drivers who squeeze their vehicle alongside another vehicle already utilising a parking bay."

Acting manager local laws, Steve Wright, said that local laws officers will be increasing patrols of problem areas and issuing penalty notices to drivers found to be doubling up in disabled parking bays.

"It should be noted that having a disabled persons parking permit displayed on the vehicle will not exonerate offenders," Mr Wright added.
