Pilot program offers pathway to promotion, higher education

The Gippsland Education Precinct is piloting a new course in 2005 which will allow people without an entry level qualification, such as the VCE, to make the transition to tertiary education.

Enrolments are now being taken for the Adult Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), which will be delivered by GippsTAFE.

According to Adult VCAL Coordinator at GippsTAFE, Elodie Ryan, this is a special course designed for people who, for a wide range of reasons, did not complete secondary school.

"Many people wish to access a business course at TAFE or University, which is often now a requirement for promotion or moving forward with their career", said Ms. Ryan.

"For people whose pathway to further education or career enhancement is being blocked by not having the required level of formal education, this course provides an answer."

The program is being delivered by GippsTAFE and Monash University through the Gippsland Education Precinct.

Participants choose from a variety of numeracy and literacy subjects, as well as industry specific skills and have the option of two university subjects as part of the course.

It is designed for people who are more than 19 years of age.

"We think the major age group will be between 19 to 45, although people in older age brackets are more than welcome to enrol," Ms. Ryan said.

"Another of the real attractions of this course is that there is a capacity for recognition of prior learning, that is, a system of credits for relevant experience and workplace experience."

The course is run over one year in a full time study mode, or two years part-time.

Further information about the course is available by contacting Ms. Ryan at GippsTAFE, telephone 5127 0187 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays or on the GippsTAFE website, www.gippstafe.vic.edu.au
