Reference groups to guide new Aquatic Centre and Traralgon sports stadium

Community Reference Groups to give voice to the community.

By Portal Admin - 18th December 2017 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council has agreed to form two community Reference Groups to guide the development of the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre and the expansion of the Traralgon Sports Stadium.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Darrell White said the community voice in these projects was critical to building a platform for success.

"Council is about to commence the development of two highly significant recreation projects for our community. Harnessing the voice of the community will be vitally important in this process," Cr White said.

"The Reference Groups will serve as critical interface points between Council and the community. Local representatives will strengthen the community’s already strong voice in the planning, design and construction of the aquatic centre and sports stadium.

"These groups will provide advice and feedback on community engagement strategies as well as act as advocates for the project back into the community.

"Monday night’s decision is the next important phase for these projects, as both Reference Groups are vital for us to take our next steps.

"Importantly, now we can get on with the job of building these state of the art regional facilities.

"Council will now hold a public expression of interest process to seek nominations for the community representative members, with the expectation this will be completed by February 2018.

"We have already undertaken discussions with stakeholders in these projects and we look forward to more discussions with our open and supportive community.

The nine-member Project Representative group for the $46 million Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre project will include representation from Traralgon Community Development Association, Locals Residents Group, Swimming Victoria, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Latrobe Health Assembly and Latrobe City councillors, along with a selected community representative.

The $17 million Traralgon Sports Stadium project will deliver upgrades to the existing Catterick Crescent indoor stadium and administration areas, including refurbishment of the show court and construction of additional courts for netball, basketball, badminton and other indoor sports.

An 11-person Traralgon Sports Stadium PRG will include local members from Traralgon Amateur Basketball Association, Netball Victoria, Badminton Victoria, Basketball Victoria, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Department of Education, Local Residents Group, Latrobe City Councillors and a community representative.

Expressions of interest for community representatives on both projects are now open until 19 December and can be directed to Larry Sengstock, Project Director – Major Recreation Projects via email latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au or by post to PO Box 264 Morwell 3840.

The development of Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre and Traralgon Sports Stadium are part of the State Government’s $85 million sports and community initiative.
