Program at Traralgon to help parents communicate with teenagers

Parentzone will run a program in Traralgon to help parents communicate with and better understand their teenage children.

By Latrobe City Council - 25th February 2004 - Back to News

The ABCD Program will discuss the changes taking place in adolescents, the influences and impact of peer pressure, parenting traps, building a healthy relationship, value systems and communicating with teenagers.

Program facilitator, Liesel Collings, said that many parents wanted advice on how to develop and strengthen their relationship with their teenager.

"Parentzone is running the ABCD Program so that parents are aware that there are ways that they can address any concerns that they have with their teenagers. The program will also give parents confidence that they are not the only ones going through what can be a very difficult time in the home. We want to support parents in their parenting skills and reinforce the good things that they are doing," Ms Collings said.

"Topics include understanding the changes your adolescent is going through; the influence and impact of peer relationships; parenting traps; building on healthy relationships; value systems and communicating with your child," Ms Collings explained.

The program is for parents with children in the 12 to 16 age bracket and aims to develop stronger links between parents and teenagers by following a successful program format that has been run across the state.

The ABCD Program will be held at the Youth Action Centre, cnr Shakespeare Street and Jones Court, Traralgon each Wednesday between 10 and 31 March. The program is scheduled to run between 7pm and 9.30pm.
