Driving To Rock

This year, more than 12,000 people will see in 2007 on Phillip Island, at the Pyramid Rock Festival. Festival ticket holders are urged to factor in the increased traffic expected in the area, when planning their trip to Pyramid Rock.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 12th December 2006 - Back to News

Bass Coast and Phillip Island are popular holiday destinations, particularly around New Year’s Eve and a high volume of traffic is expected on the roads from December 28 onwards.

Drivers are urged to consider the following when planning their trip:

  • Be aware of peak travel times;
  • Allow extra time for the trip. Normally, a trip from Melbourne CBD to Phillip Island would take around 1 hour and 45 minutes;
  • Take plenty of water and some snacks when you travel;

Last year, the combination of hot weather, holiday traffic and the Festival crowd resulted in a major traffic jam on Phillip Island and beyond, with motorists caught in their cars for several hours.

Bass Coast Shire Council and the organisers of Pyramid Rock have put in place a number of measures to avoid a repeat performance this year. These include limited capacity ‘Early Arrival’ camping ticket sales allowing for Thursday night access to the venue, access for camping patrons via the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, shuttle buses to the venue and increased holding areas for cars.

This year, visitors are also being asked to consider the impact of the current water restrictions and fire danger period during their time at the Festival.

Bass Coast Shire is in a Fire Danger Period. Fires in the open air are restricted throughout the summer. For details of restrictions that apply during a Fire Danger Period, visit the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or www.basscoast.vic.giv.au .

In addition, the area from Phillip Island to The Gurdies and across to Dalyston are on Stage 4 water restrictions. Stage 4 restrictions prohibit most outdoor water use, including watering lawns or gardens and washing boats or cars. For full details on Stage 4 restrictions, please phone Westernport Water on 1300 720 711 or visit www.westernportwater.com.au .

Tickets to the Pyramid Rock Festival sold out months ago and a brilliant line-up of local and international bands guarantees an amazing few days.
