into the impact of public land management practices on bushfires in Victoria.

The inquiry is being conducted by the Environment and Natural Resources Committee of the Victorian Parliament, of which Mr Ingram is deputy chair.

"The Environment and Natural Resources Committee has received a broad reference to inquire into and report by June 30 next year upon the impact of public land management practices on the frequency, scale and intensity of bushfires in Victoria," Mr Ingram said.

"The Committee is seeking written submissions from the public concerning the reference by Friday, May 25, 2007 and will be conducting public hearings in a number of regions including East Gippsland.

"After attending meetings in Bruthen and Heyfield this week convened by the Victorian Farmers Federation and attended by Emergency Services Commissioner, Mr Bruce Esplin, it is still very evident that many community members are critical of the way in which the recent bushfires and public lands have been managed.

"Therefore, it is essential that these people with the knowledge and concerns on these issues make written submissions to the inquiry process or request that they have the opportunity to give evidence at one of the public hearings.

"Anyone planning on making a submission should obtain a copy of the committee’s terms of reference, which is available by contacting my office.

"The committee is a real opportunity to gain bipartisan support to address a number of public land management issues that have increased the public land fire risk problems," Mr Ingram concluded.

Further information, including the terms of reference, is also available from the committee’s website, http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/enrc/inquiries/bushfires/default.htm
