Morwell Sports Stadium receives funding

Latrobe City Council and Morwell Leisure Centre User Group’s application for funding to upgrade Morwell Sports Stadium has been approved by the State Government’s Community Facility Funding program.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 16th July 2004 - Back to News

The State Government, Latrobe City Council and a variety of groups that use the Morwell Sports Stadium will contribute a total of $103,000 to redesign the disused areas next to the existing show court into multi-functional club meeting, storage and change rooms.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the funding will help Morwell Sports Stadium become a venue capable of attracting a large number of spectators to matches, competitions and tournaments.

"The stadium will undergo a complete transformation, which will include painting and the installation of new seating. Previous seating was removed several years ago for safety reasons and as a result there is currently nowhere for spectators to sit in the show court area," Cr White said.

"The Morwell Sports Stadium is an important venue in Latrobe City as it is used by many local basketball enthusiasts and other sporting groups. As a result of this, Council has worked in close partnership with a variety of local user groups to attract State Government funding that will develop the stadium into a venue that local residents can feel proud to use and visit," Cr White concluded.

Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, has also welcomed the local windfall from the State Government’s Community Facilities Funding program. "It’s a great result for the people, clubs and bodies that put in so much effort to get these projects up to the mark for approval by the Minister for Sport and Recreation," Mr Jenkins said.

"This support from our Government will lead to a swag of benefits that will be appreciated by locals for years to come," Mr Jenkins added.

Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association Secretary, Howard Williams, said that the refurbishments will benefit many sporting groups in the local area, not just basketball teams.

"Morwell Sports Stadium is the home of the local Volleyball Association, Morwell Basketball Association, Morwell Netball Association, Latrobe Valley Badminton and Morwell Swimming Club. All of these groups were vital in applying for State Government funding, and therefore the refurbishments have been designed to improve conditions for all sportspeople who use the stadium," Mr Williams said.

In conjunction with the Community Facility Funding refurbishments, Latrobe City Council has replaced the backboards in Courts Two and Three with height adjustable boards. Council has also planned additional upgrades at the stadium, including periodic spa and swimming pool repairs.
