Council commends State Government on stadium seating

Latrobe City Council has commended the State Government on its decision to fund the purchasing of a retractable seating system for the Traralgon Indoor Sports Stadium.

The decision ensures that the stadium seating will be fully funded with an injection of $230,000 from the State Government together with a $20,000 user group contribution.

Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Philip Marsh, said that Council had resolved at Monday night’s Special Council Meeting to commend the State Government and stadium user groups on the "successful solution for the Latrobe Valley".

"The refurbishment of the Traralgon Basketball Stadium to Commonwealth Games standard will create a first-class venue that will provide a lasting legacy for sportsmen, sportswomen, and junior competitors for many years to come.

"While the refurbishment of the venue itself has been funded by the State Government together with Latrobe City Council, and work is already underway; until Monday’s announcement, funding suitable seating for the Commonwealth Games and the facility’s aftermath was still an issue to be resolved," Mr Marsh explained.

"Without State funding, an additional heavy financial burden would have been placed on the local community and the ratepayers of Latrobe.

"The State Government’s resolution to take responsibility for the funding of the seating removes that burden from ratepayers, and as such will be warmly welcomed by the whole community," Mr Marsh said.

Latrobe City Councillor, Lisa Price, said Council acknowledged the work of the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins, in lobbying the State Government for funding. "The resulting announcement by the Minister for Sport and Recreation and the Commonwealth Games is heartily welcome and a great outcome for Latrobe," Cr Price said.
