Friends Of Tyers Park Receives $70,000 To Improve Environment Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has announced that the Friends of Tyers Park Inc. group has received $70,000 as part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $20 million Communities for Nature grants program. By Russell Northe - 20th April 2012 - Back to News Mr Northe said The Friend of Tyers Park Inc. have received funding for willow control on the Tyers River.
"The funding will be used to assess the extent of the willow infestation and to conduct initial control. Follow up works will be undertaken in subsequent years as required," said Mr Northe.
"It is anticipated that these works will be completed by December 2014.
"Our local environmental groups do such great work within our region in enhancing our wonderful national parks.
"I congratulate the Friends of Tyers Park for participating in this funding round and for their ongoing hard work in protecting our environment and delivering on-the-ground environmental works."
This funding is on top of the $11,000 recently received by three of Gippsland’s well known national parks through the Healthy Parks Healthy People Community Grants Program.
"The Morwell National Park, Baw Baw National Park and Tarra Bulga National Park recently received funding for various projects, including training courses and replacement of damaged amenities.
"The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to supporting local communities to take practical action in their parks, reserves and public spaces, and improve and conserve our environment" Mr Northe said.
Jim Stranger, Convenor of the Tyers "Friends" group, said that he was delighted that the grant application had been successful.
"The section to be surveyed and treated starts at the Moondarra Dam wall and follows the Tyers River down to down to Wirilda Environment Park," Mr Stranger said.
"Latrobe Valley residents are indeed lucky to have such a pristine, wild and scenic resource as this on their back doorstep. The removal of willows will ensure that it remains this way."
