Local Government Minister Gives Full Support To Council

In the wake of recent local newspaper headlines, Local Government Minister, Candy Broad, has expressed her full confidence in the Bass Coast Shire Council.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, tabled a series of newspaper headlines in a meeting with the Minister yesterday.

Cr Goodwin said the Minister expressed surprise at the headlines and said that neither her, nor her department had ever been contacted by the newspaper for comment.

"The Minister advised us that from the evidence available there are no grounds for investigating the Council.

"She said her department holds no concerns with the administration of the Bass Coast Shire.

"The Minister also stated that the articles we referred to appear to have no foundation," said Cr Goodwin.

Furthermore, said Cr Goodwin, the Minister stated that the Shire could contact her immediately to clarify any further comments attributed to her.

Cr Goodwin said the Minister’s comments should put to rest the claims being made by a local newspaper that the State Government is "watching" Bass Coast.

"The claims being made by the ‘government source’ quoted in the newspaper cannot be substantiated.

"The Minister has come out in full support of the Council and I hope this addresses any concerns the community might have in regards to this issue," Cr Goodwin concluded.
