the latest round of grants through the Victorian Coalition Government’s Organisations program.

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the grants would support the operations of Victoria’s small to medium arts organisations, which were integral to the creative and cultural life of Victoria.

"The arts are an important and widely acknowledged competitive advantage for Victoria, and small to medium organisations are a huge part of the vitality of the arts in our state," Mr Northe said.

"Arts organisations provide the foundation of our arts scene – they are innovators and creators of new artistic work, reach diverse audiences, provide jobs for artists and creative professionals and contribute to the breadth and depth of Victoria’s arts sector."

The Organisations program supports Victorian not-for-profit arts organisations at an operational level through two funding categories; the long-running Multi-year Operations category, which provides recurrent support for more than 50 organisations, and the competitive Annual Operations category, which in 2012 will provide support to 19 organisations.

"This practical operational support helps organisations to build their business capacity, contributing to their day to day costs, so that they can focus their attention on the business of producing art," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe also said that in 2012 Arts Victoria will undertake a comprehensive review of its Organisations funding program and the portfolio of organisations it supports.

"More than $24 million is provided each year to Victorian small to medium arts organisations through the Organisations program," Mr Northe said.

"The review will guide the Coalition Government on how to best support the sector into the future.

"This process will address constraints on access to multi-year funding by new companies, and ensure that public support and investment in the small to medium sector is targeted effectively and efficiently," Mr Northe said.

The review will be open and transparent, with wide consultation with the sector throughout the process. Arts Victoria will host an initial information session for arts organisations in February 2012.
