Commonsense on life jackets: Ingram

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has described the State Government’s recent publicised position to mandate the wearing of life jackets as another over the top, "big brother" regulation.

Mr Ingram said he will oppose the changes if they come before the Parliament.

"Whilst I fully understand the reasons behind the government’s push to mandate the wearing of life jackets on all small to medium sized vessels which are underway, it is not a policy I can support," he said.

"With 20 years associated with the commercial fishing industry and being a recreational boat operator and boat angler I believe that I am extremely qualified to make an informed decision on this subject.

"There should be more education - not mandating - and I have called on the government for more commonsense and responsibility on the boat operator and less nanny state regulation," Mr Ingram concluded.
