Landscape Protection At East Gippsland Field Days

Landscape protection was the theme for the Department of Primary industries’ (DPI) display at this year’s East Gippsland Field Days at Bairnsdale.

DPI’s Invasive Pest and Animal staff focused on raising community awareness about a range of support programs available including State Prohibited Weeds (SPW), Regionally Prohibited Weeds (RPW), Weed Spotters, Weedstop and Wild Dog Control.

The Landscape Protection display showcased live specimens of SPWs and ran a competition aimed at identifying two SPW species. The winner correctly identified Horsetail (Equisetum spp.) and Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and won a copy of Weeds of the South-East – an identification guide for Australia.

Weedstop highlighted ways to help minimise the spread of weeds through vehicle hygiene and demonstrated nine main locations where weeds can be found on vehicles.

The East Gippsland Field Days offered the community the opportunity to meet DPI staff and gain information first hand, as well as report sightings of possible SPW and RPW infestations around the region.
