Government must guarantee parks services: Ingram

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has challenged the State Government’s commitment to Gippsland’s spectacular and extensive national parks in a question in the State Parliament.

By Craig Ingram - 29th August 2005 - Back to News

"My question was in response to reports that the local Parks Victoria budget for on-ground works and visitor services could be cut by 25%, leaving 800,000 ha of parks and its rangers under-funded," Mr Ingram said.

"The impact comes as a result of higher wages, higher petrol prices and funding the government’s commitment to increase pest, plant and animal control.

"The continuing budget pressures on parks highlights the lack of ongoing support for National Parks once the government gains its publicity for ‘protecting’ the area.

"In Parliament, I called on the Environment Minister John Thwaites to guarantee there will be no reduction in Parks Victoria services and infrastructure maintenance in our region.

"The proposed budget cuts would cripple the ability to manage national parks in this area.

"Our region will not accept any reduction to Parks’ rangers, visitor and other tourist services.

"The government conceded in the last state budget that there is an infrastructure problem in our state’s national parks and any closures of walking tracks or decline in road and other infrastructure maintenance would further compound that issue.

"Our region needs real funding increases - not cuts - to manage the current and future needs of the region.

"I will do all in my power to guarantee that the local national parks service has the resources to manage its estate and that governments meet their commitments," Mr Ingram concluded.
