Council Pleased with Road Funding

Wellington Shire Council is pleased at the increase in local road funding announced as part of the Federal Budget on Tuesday.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th May 2006 - Back to News

"While we are yet to get written confirmation, it appears that Wellington Shire Council will receive an additional $2.1 million to be spent over the next three years," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"This is terrific news.

"It is a substantial amount and will allow faster improvements to our road and bridge network", said Cr Hole.

It is understood the money is being made available as additional funding under the Roads to Recovery rural road improvement program.

"Wellington Shire has more than 3,000km of roads and some 82 aging timber bridges.

"This would be an enormous cost on ratepayers without government support." said Cr Hole.

Once the funding is confirmed, Council will be in a position to prepare additional road and bridge work schedules. It will then able to announce which additional projects will completed over the next three years.

"We are the third largest Shire in the state with a comparatively light population spread.

"This means Wellington Shire Council is faced with special challenges when it comes to maintaining and funding our road network," said Cr Hole.

"We are pleased if Governments are recognising this problem."

Council spent some $13 million on road and bridgeworks over the last three years. With this additional government funding, plus Council’s own increases, around $18 million will be spent in the coming three years.

"We are clearly focussed on real improvements to our road network," said Cr Hole.
