The Victoria Coalition Government has invested $50,000 from the Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure fund towards an expansion of Latrobe Valley Sands which will increase productivity and create three new jobs.

Representing Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan, Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the funding would help Latrobe Valley Sands Pty Ltd invest $800,000 in its operations at Traralgon West.

Mr Northe said that the expansion will enable the company to process a greater volume of high quality sand extracted from its existing quarry site.

ˇ§This grant will help the company boost production, increase employment and significantly improve water efficiency due to adoption of mining technique which uses less water, known as dry feed excavation,ˇ¨ Mr Northe said

ˇ§Importantly water usage will be reduced by approximately 70 per cent from 6,500 litres per minute down to 1,800 litres per minute.

ˇ§This makes economic and environmental sense and in the process will create a minimum of three new jobs which is great for Latrobe Valley Sands and the community.ˇ¨

Demand for raw materials extracted by Latrobe Valley Sands was increasing due to the suitability of the sand produced for use in building materials, including the manufacturing of roof tilesˇ¨, Mr Northe said.

Member for Eastern Region Danny Oˇ¦Brien said Latrobe Valley Sands has invested significantly in recent years with annual production increasing to more than 200,000 tonnes, with this latest project further evidence of the companyˇ¦s commitment to the region.

ˇ§The $15 million Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund had invested $50,000 with the balance of project funding being provided by Latrobe Valley Sands,ˇ¨ Mr Oˇ¦Brien said.

ˇ§The Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund is helping Latrobe Valley companies reposition themselves for sustainable long-term growth.ˇ¨

The Latrobe Valley Sands project is expected to be completed in May 2015.
