Community Urged To Support Ovarian Cancer Month This February  Support Ovarian Cancer Month This February Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe is encouraging the community to support Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in February, and help raise awareness of the disease. By Russell Northe - 27th January 2012 - Back to News Mr Northe said the month is part of an international campaign to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and the associated symptoms.
"It is imperative that women in the Latrobe Valley know the symptoms of ovarian cancer, and are able to recognise the warning signs if they occur.
"There is no detection test for ovarian cancer, which is why it is so important for women to recognise the symptoms, as the Pap smear does not detect the disease.
"More than 1,200 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year in Australia – that‟s three women a day. This is a startling and worrisome fact."
Mr Northe said it is important for women to learn the symptoms of ovarian cancer. The four types of symptoms most frequently reported are:
1. Abdominal or pelvic pain
2. Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating
3. Needing to urinate often or urgently
4. Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
Mr Northe said February is a time when Ovarian Cancer Australia invites the community, volunteers and friends to raise vital funds for support programs and resources for women and their families affected by ovarian cancer, and for a national research program for ovarian cancer.
"2012 Teal ribbon Day is Wednesday 29 February, when Australians are encouraged to purchase and wear a teal ribbon to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.
"You can also host an „Afternoon Teal‟ in your workplace or at home with your friends as a way to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Australia."
"So show you support this February, buy a teal ribbon, host a morning tea, or simply talk about the symptoms of ovarian cancer with the women in your life."
