Redhill and Darlimurla Road upgrades completedMajor upgrades to Redhill Road Callignee and Darlimurla Road Boolarra have recently been completed by Latrobe City Council. By Latrobe Shire Council - 6th April 2004 - Back to News The 1.9 kilometre section of Redhill Road between the end of the existing seal and the Traralgon-Balook Road was sealed last Wednesday, following extensive work which involving widening, construction of kerb and channel, and installation of pipe drain culverts.
Councillor Bob Smith said the upgrade to Redhill Road overcame problems with an unmade winding section of road with a number of crests and troughs which made it difficult to see oncoming traffic in sections.
"Council has received a number of requests over the years for improvements to Redhill Road, and I’m glad to see these being delivered," Cr Smith said.
Cr Smith said the completed upgrade closely followed work completed on a 700 metre section of Darlimurla Road Boolarra between Bunderra Drive and Todds Road.
"The section of Darlimurla Road to receive improvements is adjacent to a number of rural residential properties, so is subject to considerable traffic. Residents are now very happy that the dust and corrugations they experienced when the road was unmade, are a thing of the past."
"The major benefit of upgrading the two roads however, is safety. Both sealed sections now provide a far safer environment for motorists," Cr Smith said.
Maintenance Engineer, Jey Vyravipillai, said both upgrades took place in areas that were identified as environmentally sensitive.
"Both projects required a lot of protection work to ensure habitat, and native trees and grasses were disturbed as little as possible. Contractors had to submit environmental protection plans as part of the tendering process," Mr Vyravipillai explained.
"Plans involved nominating areas for parking construction machinery and fencing off areas that required protection.
"Kerb and channelling was installed on sections of both roads in order to provide a safe environment while retaining most of the trees located in the road reserve. However, it was necessary to remove one tree on Redhill Road for the project to proceed.
"Both projects are also subject to additional plantings of native vegetation in the local roadside environment to compensate for vegetation removed as part of the works. The replanting will be undertaken in Spring when ground moisture levels will hopefully be back to normal," Mr Vyravipillai added.
A further road upgrade project is also underway on rural roads in Latrobe City, in Rifle Range Road, Glengarry North.
The works between Brookes Lane and Tandarra Drive involve the widening and construction of the road pavement, construction of kerb and channel in sections of the road in order to minimise potential damage to the roots of trees in the road reserve, installation of pipe drain culverts, and sealing.
All three works are being funded from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program. The roads were identified for inclusion in the program as they were unsealed with high traffic volumes and school bus usage.
