Gippsland Rugby League kicks off in 2004, with many new and exciting prospects on the schedule.

By Gippsland Rugby League - 5th January 2004 - Back to News

In Short –

  •  Gippsland hosts of the annual Country carnival in March 2004.

  • The AGM of the League saw Jeff Hiriaki return as President, Anthony Huxford as the new Vice President, Debbie McRae as Secretary and Kiri Hiriaki as Treasurer.

  • On a State level, Kiri Hiriaki remains as one the 6 Victorian Rugby League Commissioners, which is fantastic for Gippsland.

In Detail –

Season 2004 looks to be a landmark year in Gippsland Rugby League, as they take on a new identity. Changes from Wildcats to "Gippsland Storm" at the recent AGM will bring a wealth of opportunity with support from Melbourne Storm amid other ventures. This will also see Gippsland Storm players wearing new colours (Melbourne Storm) at the annual Country Carnival. GRL will be hosting this event in March 2004 where players will be selected to represent Victoria Country to take on the strong City team as curtain raiser to Melbourne Storm, Olympic Park in April 16-18. With Coach Hiriaki back at the helm, and the registered interest of past, present and a host of new players, league officials are confident Storm will overpower the ever strong country counterparts Goulburn Murray division.

The Leagues AGM was held late last year, and it was positive to see the League Committee fill all positions. Jeff Hiriaki returned as President with player Anthony Huxford as Vice President welcoming newcomer Debbie McRae as Secretary and Kiri Hiriaki as Registrar. The new Exec committee will meet in preparation for what promises to be an exciting season. The Leagues first General Meeting will be the first Monday in February.

Finally – the Victorian Rugby League had its AGM in early December, and our own Kiri Hiriaki was returned as one of the 6 Commissioner’s on the VRL Board. This is Hiriaki’s second term of a three year position where her presence on the Commission is of great benefit to Gippsland Rugby League in that we have a very strong voice at a State Level. It also goes without saying that Rugby league in Victoria is greatly benefited by her presence, and we wish her and the VRL all the best for 2004.

Yours in Rugby League,

Jeff Hiriaki – President.
