Questions on Road safety barriers
Installation of Wire Rope Barriers forged ahead despite questions on road safety.
Russell Northe, Member for Morwell has today raised the concerns of many local motorists in relation to the installation of Wire Rope Barriers (WRB) across the Gippsland region.
Mr Northe who is the Chair of the Latrobe L2P program and a member of the Gippsland Road Heroes committee said "All of us want to see improved road safety particularly on our country roads; however it’s imperative that any investment carries with it real outcomes and not unintended consequences."
Mr Northe said "Whilst there is no dispute that the installation of WRB’s is intended to improve road safety, many questions are being asked and concerns being raised by local motorists on the efficacy and costs of the program."
"A number of local motorists have highlighted issues including the lack of accessibility for emergency service vehicles, the narrow buffer on the sides of some sections of roads, motorcycle safety concerns, and why these works are ongoing yet the state of our roads remain poor" said Mr Northe.
"These are legitimate questions and ones which the Minister for Roads and Road Safety should provide answers for" Mr Northe said.
"Unfortunately it appears the Government has forged ahead with these works without any consultation or consideration of local communities, motorists and emergency service personnel" said Mr Northe.
