Yinnar - Overnight Host For Great Victorian Bike RideMore than 4000 bicycle riders are expected to converge on Yinnar on Tuesday 27 November after the township was announced by Bicycle Victoria as an official overnight stopover as part of the 2007 Great Victorian Bike Ride. By Latrobe City - 27th March 2007 - Back to News A huge tent city with mobile infrastructure such as toilets, kitchens and showers will be set up during the day at the Yinnar Recreation Reserve; with a stream of riders expected to begin arriving early in the afternoon after a mainly downhill cruise from their lunchtime venue, Mirboo North.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora, said the exciting announcement of Yinnar as an overnight stop comes after months of negotiations, and is a significant achievement for the region.
"Latrobe City is very pleased to be associated with this prestigious community participation event that has won the hearts and minds of tens of thousands of Victorians over the years.
"The Great Victorian Bike Ride attracts thousands of like-minded travellers every year who enjoy the scenic countryside along the route of the ride. With this year’s ride returning to some very scenic coastal country, including a free day on Wilson’s Promontory, there is likely to be strong interest in participating," Cr Zimora said.
"It’s not a race, but an enjoyable ride that attracts large numbers of families and individuals, and people of all ages and from all backgrounds, to experience the joys of the Victorian countryside.
"It’s not just the scenery the cyclists enjoy. Cyclists take pleasure in the camaraderie with their fellow bike riders along the way; meeting the local population along the course of the ride, and enjoying the hospitality of refreshment outlets and attractions en-route and at their overnight destinations. It’s a really great experience for those who take part," Cr Zimora explained.
The ride which has been staged since 1984, is one of the most popular multi-day rides in Victoria, visiting different parts of the state each year. It is expected to attract between 4,000 and 8,000 riders into the region as well as another 500 volunteers to help with the logistics of the event.
The ride will commence on Phillip Island on Saturday 24 November, making its way to Wonthaggi and Foster, then taking a ‘rest’ day to explore Wilsons Promontory. After their day on the Prom, riders will cycle through Fish Creek, Meeniyan and Mirboo North to Yinnar on Tuesday 27 November. After enjoying their night in Yinnar, riders will cycle to Rawson on the Wednesday, with many detouring to Walhalla; before making their way to Maffra and Paynesville and finally concluding their journey in Buchan.
Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said the Great Victorian Bike Ride is likely to generate considerable economic benefits for communities across the region.
"While many of the cyclists will no doubt be ready for a well earned rest at the end of their day’s ride at Yinnar, from our observations when Glengarry was an overnight stop in 2003, a considerable number of participants will probably want to explore surrounding towns in the afternoon and evening.
"Based on the previous spending patterns of the riders, Latrobe City can expect a considerable economic influx to be generated from the single night’s stay. This is one of the major reasons why Latrobe City tries to attract major events into the municipality.
"Secondary economic benefits are also expected, with many of the participants hopefully returning to the region at a later time to enjoy the many attractions our municipality has to offer.
"We look forward to working with the Yinnar & District Community Association in the lead up to the event to maximise benefits for the community, and in working with Bicycle Victoria to help ensure that the event is a great success," Mr Buckley added.
