Bass Coast adopts plan to deliver new mountain bike, BMX and pump track facilities across five priority sitesBass Coast has adopted a plan to develop five new bike and pump track facilities, supporting active lifestyles, tourism, and inclusive recreation through staged delivery and community collaboration. By news@gippsland - 20th June 2025 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council has adopted the Implementation Plan for the Mountain Bike/BMX/Pump Strategy at its June council meeting, setting the foundation for a series of exciting new recreational facilities across the region. 
Bass Coast heard strong community support for more bike tracks and developed a draft strategy with expert and public input Pedal-friendly placesThe Plan identifies five priority sites for design and future development. These sites will accommodate a variety of users and skill levels, offering inclusive and accessible outdoor spaces for bike riders, scooter users, skaters, and families. The Implementation Plan focuses on: West Area Road (State Coal Mine Site), WonthaggiA mountain bike and pump facility is proposed here, using the site's natural features. Design elements include beginner and intermediate flow trails, a hybrid pump/jumps trail, and an upgraded car park. The location's proximity to the Bass Coast Rail Trail makes it a key destination. Gap Road, VentnorThis council-managed site is suited for a wide range of cycling activities. Proposed features include jump lines of varying difficulty, asphalt flow and pump tracks, and cross-country trails. Adjacent land managed by Westernport Water may enable expansion of the trail network. Five Ways Reserve, CowesA short, easy cross-country loop is proposed, incorporating timber and dirt features. The reserve is managed by Phillip Island Nature Parks, and any future development will be subject to their approval and minimal impact on native vegetation. Sunset Strip ReserveThis site, currently used informally by local riders, will be formalised with two jump trails and a cross-country loop designed for beginner to intermediate users. The trails will be constructed away from the roadway and will feature table-top jumps, berms, and rollers. Sunnyside Reserve, Cape WoolamaiFollowing community consultation and a petition advocating for youth recreation facilities, a new asphalt pump track is planned for this site. The track will support bikes, scooters and skateboards, and include amenities such as shelter, seating, drinking water and accessible pathways. Developed in partnership with the Bass Coast Mountain Bike Association Working Group and a professional design consultant, the plan builds on the Mountain Bike/BMX/Pump Strategy adopted in August 2024, which was informed by extensive community engagement. Riding into actionInitial design work will be delivered in the 2025/26 financial year using existing operational budgets. Once complete, these designs will give council shovel-ready projects ready to apply for external funding for construction, with opportunities already identified through Sport and Recreation Victoria and similar programs. Further discussions with relevant landowners will continue as part of the planning and design process. Our community is full of passionate BMX and Mountain Bike riders of all ages. We're excited for our community to see more BMX, Mountain Biking or Pump Tracks that support healthy, active lifestyles and attract both local users and visitors. The staged delivery approach will ensure a broad distribution of facilities across the Shire, enhancing Bass Coast's reputation as an outdoor activity destination.
