Barrier Breakers Set To Receive A Boost If A Coalition Government Is Re-Elected

A re-elected Victorian Coalition Government will provide $120,000 to local mental health advocacy group Barrier Breakers, Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe announced today.

By Russell North - 27th October 2014 - Back to News

The announcement was made at the Barrier Breakers Annual Charity Dinner on Saturday evening, which is helping to raise funds towards a mental health supported accommodation project in Traralgon.

Mr Northe said the election commitment of $120,000 will be provided to assist Barrier Breakers with administrative costs and mental health support services across Gippsland.

"Barrier Breakers is a mental health advocacy organisation committed to providing individual support services to improve the quality of life of people who experience a mental illness," Mr Northe said.

"Since its establishment the association has undertaken specifically targeted research into mental health needs in the Gippsland region.

"Barrier Breakers is experiencing strong demand for its services by people in the region who experience difficulty in coping with mental illness."

Mr Northe said the funding commitment was a welcome recognition of the important work the association does locally supporting people with a mental illness in the Gippsland region.

"Previously the Victorian Coalition Government has provided $100,000 to support Barrier Breakers with support services and administration costs.

"The Victorian Coalition Government has committed $450,000 towards the capital cost of the construction of a supported accommodation project which will involve building six supported accommodation units in Traralgon."

Mr Northe said the Gippsland community through Barrier Breakers are also contributing significant funding to this project, along with East Coast Housing. I am also pleased that $348,000 has been provided by the Victorian Coalition Government to deliver support services through MIND Australia.

A number of other important mental health projects have been supported by our Government including:

· $3.2 million for the Doorways project which will provide 20 additional rental units for people with a mental illness · $6.5 million towards a 5 bed Mother-baby unit at Latrobe Regional Hospital · $5.3 million towards the provision of 6 new inpatient mental health beds at Latrobe Regional Hospital Mr Northe said unlike other political parties or candidates the Coalition is the only party that is committed to addressing the needs of local mental health advocacy groups.
