Bass Coast And Vicroads Working Together Chief Executive Officer of VicRoads, Mr David Anderson, visited Wonthaggi on Wednesday 2 November for a meeting with representatives from Bass Coast Shire Council. By Bass Coast Shire - 14th November 2005 - Back to News Mr Anderson was accompanied on his trip by senior VicRoads staff members Mr David Shelton - Regional Manager Easter, Mr Harvey Dinelli - Manager Program Development, and Ms Gill Miles - Director Regional Services.
"We are extremely appreciative that Mr Anderson and his staff made the time to come to Bass Coast," said Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Danny Luna.
"Mr Anderson came here specifically to discuss the issues of the Shire in relation to VicRoads."
New entrance for Wonthaggi
A key item on the agenda for discussion was the upgrade of the Bass Highway entrance to the northern end of Wonthaggi.
"An upgrade of the entrance to Wonthaggi has been a priority for Council for a number of years," said Mr Luna.
"Aside from the obvious need to address safety concerns, it’s important that the entrance to Wonthaggi appropriately reflects the growth and economic development of the Shire."
VicRoads and Council representatives met on site at the highway entrance and discussed in detail the issues and possible solutions to the problems identified.
"Council received a firm commitment from Mr Anderson that he would give serious consideration to the matters discussed," said Mr Luna.
"This is a very positive development."
Mr Luna said that Council’s willingness to share in the construction of the project would play a major part in VicRoads’ assessment. Mr Luna stressed, however, that this did not guarantee funding for the project.
"It is certainly very encouraging that this project will have a high profile when the next round of VicRoads funding is considered," said Mr Luna.

Bass Highway Duplication
Mr Anderson reported that the duplication of the Bass Highway to Anderson is on track. Mr Luna confirmed that VicRoads is hopeful of securing funding for the duplication to continue from King Road, Bass to the Anderson roundabout.
The issue of public transport in regional areas was also on the agenda, including the work that Mr Anderson has undertaken with the Director of Public Transport, Mr Jim Betts, about providing better use of public transport connections and vehicles in regional areas.
"One of the things that came out of the discussions on regional public transport is the scope to better utilise vehicles such as school and council buses to help move our community," said Mr Luna.
"More effective use of these vehicles is something that we will be investigating."
"Mr Anderson also recognised the vital role of taxis in moving people around the Shire and the difficulties that arise from the shortage of taxis."
Other issues discussed at the meeting included:
· A range of traffic matters on Phillip Island including speed limits, intersections, passing lanes and the traffic related issues that came out as a result of the recent VicRoads/Council consultation process.
· Intersection treatment at Korumburra Road/McKenzie Street, Wonthaggi.
· Pedestrian crossing or tunnel at Kilcunda to allow school children and people travelling on public transport to cross the Highway.
