Sailability boost for Wellington

Wellington Shire Council has been pleased to help local organisation Sailability revolutionise its operations by funding the construction of a custom-built jetty on Lake Guthridge - greatly improving sailboat access for those with a disability.

The $20,000 jetty has introduced a new dimension of ease for Sailability Wellington which was previously launching its vessels directly from the banks of the lake.

Sailability Wellington is an inclusive service that brings the adventure of sailing to able-bodied and disabled local residents, teaching and empowering them to sail safely and participate in activities which build confidence and self-esteem, and promote independence.

Said Sailability Chairman Neil Ross: "Sailability gives those with disabilities in particular a real sense of freedom and independence that they never had before, especially with many sailing solo as part of the program."

Amongst those benefiting from Sailability are Wellington schools, community groups and adult disability services.

Said Wellington Shire Mayor John Jago: "Encouraging the development of groups like Sailability reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to creating an accessible Wellington as highlighted in our Access Policy & Action Plan. We are delighted to have been able to help with the jetty initiative."

Sailability will be holding a day of time trials and races to coincide with International Day of People with a DisAbility on 3 December, at Lake Guthridge from 12.00-2.30pm.

Wellington Shire Council will also be holding a free Good Access is Good Business seminar on Monday, 1 December from 6.00-8.00pm at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre, to mark the special day. For more information please telephone Frances Ford, Wellington Shire Rural Access Officer on 1300 366 244.
