By news@gippsland - 21st May 2024 - Back to News Latrobe City Council will celebrate volunteers and promote volunteer opportunities during National Volunteer Week from 20 - 26 May 2024. National Volunteer Week is Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteering. It provides an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers in communities and invites people not currently volunteering to give it a go. This year's National Volunteer Week theme is 'Something for Everyone' highlighting that there's a place for everyone in the world of volunteering.

"Volunteering has many positive benefits for an individual such as increasing wellbeing and providing a sense of purpose." "It is also a great family activity that can lead to improving connection to the community and strengthening relationships. Whether you're drawn to environmental causes, community welfare, education, sport or beyond, there's a place where your unique skills and interests can flourish." "I have volunteered at local clubs, including the Toongabbie Football Club, South Side Junior Club and APEX. My time as a volunteer has helped me meet new people, learn new skills and gain a sense of achievement. I take great pride in volunteering and highly encourage community members from all ages, backgrounds and skill levels to give it a go," said the Mayor. Start volunteering todayDeputy Mayor, Councillor Tracie Lund shared that speaking to Council is a great place to start when researching volunteering opportunities. "Council provides financial and administrative support to many wonderful community groups and community asset committees that aid in the maintenance and management of rural recreation reserves across the municipality, such as the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden, Bush reserves and Rail Trails. "If you'd like to make a positive impact on the community and foster a greater sense of connection and belonging for yourself and those around you, I encourage you to enquire about volunteering," said the Deputy Mayor. Celebrate emergency volunteersVolunteers are there in times of need, especially those who volunteer for emergency services. Council recognises the important fundraising efforts generated by the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF). This fund provides emergency resources like food and shelter when natural disasters occur and is proudly celebrating 45 years of operation this year. The region also has several wonderful emergency response volunteers that provide critical assistance during events such as fire, flood and storm. On Wednesday 22 May, The Gippsland Performing Arts Centre will be illuminated in orange to show support for Wear Orange Wednesday, the national day of recognition for SES volunteers. Discover volunteer opportunitiesOn Saturday 25 May, Latrobe City Council will showcase an array of exciting local volunteering opportunities at the Volunteering Connections Event. Dozens of local community groups and organisations are attending to help community members find their perfect volunteer role. This is a wonderful opportunity for those considering volunteering to learn about why it's such a rewarding experience and how it can be tailored to an individual's values and lifestyle. The event is being held at the Forecourt area of Traralgon Library and Gippsland Performing Arts Centre from 9am to 1pm.
