Keeping local Elders in their community

The local community of Stratford has recently seen a big addition to their community, a brand new retirement village. This 10-unit ‘micro-community’, located on Uniting Church land,

aims to assist local ‘elders’ to stay living and connected to their community by providing suitable housing options. The initiative was also seen as an opportunity to make better use of Church land, and to enable investment back into local services (i.e. health care).

The issue of older people having to leave because of limited housing options, has a devastating effect on the fabric of any community. Losing elders from small communities leaves a big gap, where previously these people played a key role to support family and friends, local commence, and volunteer services, among other things. After witnessing firsthand local community and congregation members leaving Stratford when the time came to down-size due to limited housing options, the Stratford Uniting Church went about remedying this problem.

It all started seven years ago from an idea the then local Uniting Church minister, Ivy Goodwin, had. After extensive consultation with local community members, Uniting Care Gippsland and the Wellington Shire, it was evident there was a real need for aged care support and retirement units in Stratford. Seven years down the track the St Andrew's Retirement Village for over 55’s was officially opened in April 2012. This was no small feat, considering the substantial cost, professional knowledge and time investment that was required to build this 10-unit village.

This did not deter the Church, and now the dream is a reality. The St Andrew's Retirement Village is located on the corner of Tyres and Niel St, Stratford. The Village is managed by UnitingCare Gippsland, in partnership with the Stratford Uniting Church and local community representatives. The units are available for occupancy to over 55's wanting to enjoy the charm and hospitality of a small country town. Inspect of the units is welcome by appointment.
