• Medical School 2008

Professor Chris Browne has been formally approved as Head of School of the new Monash University Gippsland Campus medical school. Professor Browne was originally appointed Acting Head, but based upon his commitment to the position and the region, the Vice Chancellor and the Special Professorial Appointments Committee appointed him Head of School, from July 1st 2006 for a 5 year term. Professor Browne is committed to the successful establishment of the Gippsland Medical School to ensure the medical teaching program is well established in the Gippsland region. The four year graduate medical program will be enrolling its first group of students in early 2008. An estimated 60 students are expected to enrol in the program in the first intake.

The Institute for Regional Studies will be holding an Industrial Relations Forum titled ‘Changes to the Industrial Relations Act and the Impact on Our Region’ on Tuesday, July 25 from 1-2.30pm in lecture theatre 4N120. Speakers will update participants on the complex and challenging changes to the Act. Speakers include Vice President MJ Lawler (Australian Industrial Relations Commission), David Gregory (General Manager Workplace Relations, Victorian Employer’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Cath Smith (Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Council of Social Service) and Simon Crean (Shadow Minister for Regional Development).

• Making the Grade

Dr Keith Wilson from the Gippsland Campus School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences will be presenting a paper at the Australian/New Zealand American Studies Conference in Tasmania in July. The paper is based on research undertaken at the Minnesota Historical Society and is titled ‘The Densmore Brothers’ War on Slavery’.

Professor Hu Yan, Vice-Dean of the School of Nursing and Ms Cao Yuling, Deans’ Assistant responsible for international relationships from the School of Nursing, Fudan University, Shanghai will be visiting the Gippsland School of Nursing. The visit is to further progress academic, research and professional collaboration between the two Schools of Nursing which was formalised by the signing of a MOU between Monash and Fudan Universities in November, 2005.

Congratulations to Gippsland Campus students who recently took part in the Southern University Games in Ballarat. Students from Gippsland Campus won medals in Women’s AFL, Men’s AFL, Lawn Bowls, Ten Pin Bowling, Baseball, Mixed Netball, Men’s Soccer and Softball. Monash University won the overall championship.
