Rate Relief For Pensioners

East Gippsland Shire pensioners will benefit from increases to the municipal rates concession as part of a major State Government reform to concession arrangements.

By news@gippsland - 19th May 2004 - Back to News

For the 2004-05 financial year (1 July – 30 June), the maximum municipal rates concession will rise by $25 from $135 to $160, for holders of a Pension Concession Card or Veteran’s Affairs Gold Card.

East Gippsland Mayor, Harvey Bates, welcomed the announcement and added that it will assist many low income senior East Gippsland ratepayers.

"The $25 concession increase is the first increase since 1982/83 and will help ease the burden on many East Gippslanders," Cr Bates said.

"East Gippsland has a higher percentage of senior citizens per population than many other Victorian municipalities.

"While the concession rate assistance is much appreciated, Council would like to have seen a much greater increase as property values have risen significantly over the last 20 years and a doubling of the concession would have been more in keeping with these increases," Cr Bates said.

Concessions will be indexed to CPI each year from the concession period starting 1 July 2005.
