Bass Coast Community Grants Come Early

Applications for Bass Coast Shire Council’s highly successful Community Grant Program will open earlier this year after a review of the grant process.

Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said starting the grant process sooner means that grants can be forwarded to successful applicants earlier than past years. Council is aiming to have the grants approved in July or August this year.

"The 2012/13 grant program will close on 18 May 2012 so Council can consider the applications before the start of the next financial year.

"We are holding a Community Grant Forum at the Kilcunda Community Hall on Tuesday, 17 April at 6.00 pm, to help groups wanting to apply for a grant.

"The grant program becomes oversubscribed, so it is important that application forms are filled out correctly. This is an opportunity to go through the revised application form, grant criteria and other changes that have been made,"continued Mr Piasente.

The forum is open to all community not-for-profit organisations in Bass Coast Shire and no registration is required. The Community Grant Program, including the Special Event program, will be discussed. There will be an opportunity for groups to meet Council staff and seek assistance with proposed applications.

Mr Piasente explained that Council has also reviewed the grant program time frame. Under the old system, by the time successful grant recipients received their funding they only had six months to spend their money and then report back to Council on the outcomes of the grant.

"This has been reviewed to allow more time. As a result, the grant program will now open in March each year.

"Other changes to the grant program are a weighted assessment for applications and revised funding criteria.

"All of these changes will be discussed at the Community Grant Forum so it is important that interested community groups attend the session," Mr Piasente said.

Council’s grant programs provide close to $200,000 to over 50 community groups across the Shire. Grants range from small grants for equipment or workshops, grants for community events through to maximum grants of $5,000 for building works.
Application forms and information are available on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au, by going to Community/Community grants.

Alternatively visit any Council Customer Service Centres or call 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
Applications close Friday, 18 May 2012.
