Parkinson’S Nurse Needed In Gippsland

The needs of Gippsland residents struggling with Parkinson’s disease were put on the agenda last week in State Parliament, including support for a Parkinson’s specific nurse in the region.

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe addressed the Minister for Health on behalf of Gippsland residents suffering from the disease and their families.

Mr Northe detailed his visit to a local Parkinson’s support group meeting in the Latrobe Valley, and spoke of the work they do in advocating for and supporting local people who are impacted by Parkinson’s.

"It was a real eye-opener to witness the passion, the commitment and the dedication of those in the room.

"Many in the room were carers of those affected by Parkinson's and in many cases the partners of these same people. They spoke about the challenges they confront on a daily basis in dealing with Parkinson's.

"During the meeting it was strongly put to me that there is a need for a Parkinson's-specific nurse in Gippsland. The consensus was that such a service would make an enormous difference to the lives of so many people who contend with Parkinson's, and not only those people but their family and friends who help care for them."

Mr Northe said Parkinson’s medication management is complex due to unique timing of medication in many circumstances.

"It cannot be tackled with a one-size-fits-all approach and if medication is not managed correctly there can be significant side effects.

"It can take people a long time for people to recover from incorrectly administered medication; hence the reason why a Parkinson's-specific nurse is critical to this region."

Subsequent to discussions with the local Parkinson’ support group, Mr Northe said he had been contacted by a number of members of the group requesting that he take up the cause of a Parkinson’s-specific nurse in Gippsland. "There is no doubt there is an inherent need for such a position within the Gippsland region and across other regional areas of Victoria. I spoke briefly in person with the Minister for Health last week in Parliament on this matter and I look forward to the Ministers response given his indication that he would follow up on this important issue."
