Council Staff Step Out

October has been renamed Walktober and Bass Coast Shire Council is supporting the initiative with a Walk to Work day on Wednesday, 17 October.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, is taking advantage of the idea, to start a new health regime.

"We all know the benefits of exercise and walking to work is certainly one good way to get healthy," said Cr Goodwin.

"We’ll be encouraging all the staff to put on their comfortable shoes and make the walk. Some staff live a bit far away to walk the whole distance, but we’re hoping they will park a few streets away and then walk the rest of the way."

Council will be encouraging staff to walk to work on Wednesday, 17 October by providing a healthy breakfast for those that take part. Staff will be asked to make a gold coin donation at the breakfast and proceeds will go to Relay for Life. A number of local businesses have pitched in to help with the breakfast.

"We’d like to thank Baker’s Delight and Poole’s Fresh Produce for their contributions to the breakfast," said Cr Goodwin.

Cr Goodwin said it would be great if local businesses considered organising something similar and urged people to get into the spirit of Walktober.

"There are activities happening right across Victoria which include everyone from babies in prams to seniors." Cr Goodwin said.

"Walking is easy. It’s free and it’s good for all of us."

This is the second year Walktober has been held. Developed by Kinect Australia (formerly Vic Fit) in collaboration with VicHealth, Walktober aims to raise the profile of walking and highlight the broader community and social benefits.

Last year more than 50,000 people and 300 organisations took part in Walktober activities in Victoria.

A number of high profile events are being held in Walktober – all of which incorporate walking and promote liveable communities.
