Local Experts To Help Shape Regional Water Plan

Local communities will help shape a long-term strategy to secure Gippsland’s water supplies and underpin the regional economy for the next 50 years

According to the chair of the newly formed Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy consultative committee.

The consultative committee will work closely with the local community and the State Government to develop the water strategy for the Gippsland region.

The consultative committee, led by South Gippsland Water Chair Llew Vale on behalf of the Department of Sustainability and Environment, includes representatives from local water corporations, catchment management authorities, local government, industry, agriculture and the environment.

Mr Vale said the Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy would be the region’s response to the implications for water availability resulting from climate change, drought, population and land use changes.

"Water is the lifeblood of the Gippsland region," Mr Vale said.

"Many of Gippsland’s greatest assets depend on reliable water resources, including its agricultural base, much of its industry, and its spectacular tourism attractions.

"The strength of these industries and Gippsland’s major regional centres provide the thousands of jobs that people depend on in the region."

Mr Vale said the Strategy would provide the policy and planning framework for securing water for towns, industry, the environment and agriculture.

The Strategy will encompass the entire Gippsland region, including the towns of Warragul, Leongatha, Traralgon, Maffra, Sale, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost.

Public feedback will be sought following the release of a Discussion Paper in mid-2009. This feedback will help in the preparation of a draft Strategy.

A second consultation period will follow the release of a draft Strategy in late 2009. The final strategy is expected to be released in early 2010.
