Festival for WurrukThe ’Celebrate Wurruk!’ festival will be held in the town on Sunday 7 May. Events will be happening in and around the Wurruk Community House in White Court. By Wellington Shire Council - 28th April 2006 - Back to News The festival has been organised by Wurruk residents in association with Wellington Shire Council, Victoria Police, Wurruk Neighbourhood Watch, Wurruk Community House, Office of Housing, Kilmany Uniting Care and Wurruk Primary School.
The event is part of Housing Week and supported by the State Government of Victoria.
The festival features a free BBQ, live music, jumping castle, Pinnacle of Terror climbing tower, face painting, agency displays, with show bags and give-aways.
The action happens at the Community House from 12 noon – 4 pm.
"This is a great initiative from the group and I offer them my congratulations on their foresight," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.
"The goal is to have an event that celebrates the good things about living in Wurruk and builds on the community spirit, so come and enjoy the activities," said Cr Hole.
The festival grew out of a working group that aims to strengthen relationships between tenants, private owners and agencies in the community and demonstrate that the community can do something for itself.
"Like many local communities, Wurruk residents decided that they could achieve a lot more to improve their community by banding together and working with local government, state departments and community support agencies," said Mr Frank Pearce, Community Strengthening Co-ordinator with Wellington Shire Council.
"The community has identified BBQs and events as a very positive way to draw people together.
"The outcome, "Celebrate Wurruk!", is designed to appeal to all age levels, with something for everyone," said Mr Pearce.
The working group will build on the relationships established through the organising the event to further strengthen the community. Future meetings of the group will solicit feedback from Wurruk residents about further improvements to the community.
