Small Town Development To Continue

East Gippsland Shire’s small towns are set to benefit from the Shire’s 2006/07 Council Plan and Budget.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

CEO, Steve Kozlowski said that the Council Plan and Budget contained several initiatives for improvements to the Shire’s small towns.

"The success of recent town development improvements in Omeo are set to be continued in many of the Shire’s coastal towns following completion of current Urban Design Framework plans," he said.

"The Council Plan and Budget have provided $1million annually over the next 5 years to implement the Shire’s town development program.

Mr Kozlowski said public area improvements identified in the Urban Design Plan would be provided under this program supported by the State Government’s Small Town development fund."

The Budget identifies specific funding over the next two years for:

  • Omeo Streetscape Stage 2 – $250,000
  • Swifts Creek Streetscape Stage 1 - $349,000
  • Bruthen Streetscape improvements - $195,000
  • Lakes Entrance Streetscape improvements - $555,000
  • Mallacoota Pathways Project - $500,000
  • Bairnsdale Streetscape improvements - $750,000

Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe said that in addition to the specific funding that has been provided by the Shire over the next two years, there was significant funding nominated for the period 2008-2010 to implement the priority public space improvements identified in the current Urban Design Framework plans.

"In the past, plans have been prepared but then funding hasn’t been provided to see them implemented," she said.

"The new Council Plan and Budget ensures that the required funding will be provided."

Cr Rowe said it would also capitalise on the four year commitment of the State Government to continue the current Small Town Development Fund whereby Councils can attract $2:$1 matching funding for qualifying projects.

"The result of these works will enhance the liveability of these towns, improve the economic viability of some and make an indelible difference to the overall Shire," she said.
