The welcome grant was announced today by Justin Madden MLC, Minister for Sport and Recreation, and is being provided under the Victorian Government’s Better Pools Program following a concerted two-year lobbying effort by the council to secure the funding.

The upgrade will see Lex Glover become a top-class regional sport and recreation facility, benefiting the shire community as a whole.

The remaining $4.2 million for the project is to be provided by the council with support from local community contributions, with construction set to begin in March 2006 and completion expected within 12 months.

Key features will include:

  • a learn to swim and beach entry toddlers pool;
  • a hydrotherapy/program pool;
  • new showers and changing room facilities;
  • new toilets;
  • new access, entry and foyer area;
  • a new gym, aerobics and cardio-fitness area;
  • a crèche facility.

The design concept and specifications for the upgrade have been developed following extensive community consultation via a steering committee that was created in the initial stages of the planning process.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "The Lex Glover Swimming Complex is in much need of this upgrade which will turn it into a top-class regional facility. The council and community welcomes this financial contribution from the Victorian Government and we look forward to the completion of the project.

"This is a very worthwhile investment for our shire community which many sporting groups, schools and residents will benefit from. This upgrade will restore Lex Glover to the state-of-the-art swimming complex that the Wellington community deserves, and will become an asset to sport and recreation in the shire and the Gippsland region."
