By Russell Northe - 23rd October 2013 - Back to News

A total of $312,000 has been provided to fund 21 projects across Victoria under the third round of the Graffiti Prevention and Removal grants.

Announcing the grant today, Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the funding will be used to coordinate local community groups, including Neighbourhood Watch and retail traders associations, to utilise a purpose-built graffiti removal trailer, supplied by the Department of Justice, to remove graffiti in towns across the municipality. "This grant will go a long way to support innovative and effective local solutions in the Morwell electorate," Mr Northe said.

"The Graffiti Prevention and Removal Grants provide funding to develop and deliver local graffiti prevention and removal solutions for the local community.

"Graffiti is a significant scourge on our landscape and there is nothing positive about illegally vandalising public and private property.

"Preventing graffiti – and removing it when it does occur – is an important way we can build community confidence in the safety of public places.

"The partnerships between local councils and community groups generated through this grants program also helps improve the visual amenity of neighbourhoods." The program provides grants of up to $25,000 for councils across the state to partner with community groups to develop and support local responses to graffiti. The Victorian Government has now provided more than $900,000 in grants to local communities for 57 projects to deter, prevent and clean-up illegal graffiti such as education and engagement programs, environmental design and public art features such as murals and graffiti removal kits. The Graffiti Prevention and Removal Grants are part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s broader $35 million Community Crime Prevention Program, which provides support and funding for local communities to identify and prioritise local crime issues to help deliver a safer, more secure Victoria.
