Alternative Boat Ramp For Coronet BayThe Coronet Bay community has been given the go ahead to explore alternative locations for a boat ramp. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th October 2008 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, confirmed that a letter has been received from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), but it was not formal approval for a new boat ramp.
"The letter confirms that it would be possible to construct a boat ramp at an alternative location, subject to a number of conditions," Mr Bawden said.
DSE outlined three key components needed for the project to go ahead.
- Council would be appointed as land manager over the proposed boat ramp and associated infrastructure, including the area seaward of the high water mark
- Council would be responsible for construction and maintenance of a public boat ramp and associated onshore infrastructure
- Approval for the project will be subject to the normal approval processes
"In August, Cr Veronica Dowman, the Mayor and Dr Tim Ealey met with DSE and Parks Victoria to discuss options for a boat ramp in Coronet Bay," Mr Bawden said.
"At this meeting, a report was presented on the possibility of installing a reusable boat ramp, similar to the one used at Maher’s Landing.
"DSE needed to investigate the status of the land and the management responsibilities of such a project, to see if it was possible," explained Mr Bawden.
"The letter we received clarifies these issues."
Cr Veronica Dowman has worked closely with the community to find an alternative location for the boat ramp.
"This is very exciting news for the Coronet Bay community," said Cr Dowman.
"We are now able to look at Cutty Sark Road as an alternative location. The community will be closely consulted on how they would like to see this project proceed."
Cr Dowman said the possibility of funding for the boat ramp through Marine Safety Victoria was being investigated.
"The Corinella Foreshore Committee is working with the Coronet Bay community on the project," said Cr Dowman.
"A boat ramp in Coronet Bay will take the pressure off their ramp, which is currently dealing with a lot of traffic."
At the Meeting on 15 October, Council agreed in principle, to the concept of developing recreational boating facilities at Coronet Bay.
"This agreement is subject to further detailed investigation and input from the community," explained Mr Bawden.
"Council will be writing to Marine Safety Victoria to find out whether any funding is available through their grants program.
"We will also be writing to tell DSE that Council agrees to be the appointed manager for that area of land, subject to a detailed site assessment, availability of funding and community consultation."
