Ingram welcomes Bass stocking of Snowy River

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Agriculture, Bob Cameron, on the Australian Bass stocking program for the Snowy River.

Mr Ingram, who is also president of Native Fish Australia, said recent scientific research has shown that there has been a serious decline in the native fish population, including the Australian Bass in the Snowy River.

"This research has indicated that there has been limited successful breeding recoupment of the population over the past 16 years, placing the population at serious risk," Mr Ingram said.

"Australian Bass live for about 25 years, so it is essential that fisheries assist the natural spawning process to maintain a viable Australian Bass brood stock in the Snowy River.

"The Catchment Management Authority’s catchment works on the Snowy River including riparian vegetation restoration, willow removal and the in stream fish habitat works combined with the increase in environmental flows will improve the chances of the long term viability of the native fish population.

"Over the next month brood stock will be collected for the breeding program," Mr Ingram concluded.
