Commitment to a healthy community

Baw Baw Shire Council has confirmed its commitment to health and wellbeing across the shire by dedicating additional funds to recreation in the proposed 2006/07 budget.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

Council is proposing to make significant investment in recreation over the coming four years, according to council’s chief executive officer, Mr Glenn Patterson.

"This budget is looking towards the future of Baw Baw Shire and injecting much needed funds into open space development, cycling and walking paths and asset management," said Mr Patterson.

"Western Park will receive further upgrades, lighting, drive sealing and additional cricket facilities.

"This is a heavily used facility by many residents across the shire and could become a real focal point for recreation in Baw Baw."

In the coming financial year, council will implement a walking strategy across the shire as part of the broader commitment to the Walk Baw Baw program designed to increase community health and wellbeing.

"This budget also provides an allocation to expand the Trafalgar Recreation Reserve to provide more facilities for team based sports.

"The Trafalgar community has dedicated a lot of time and effort in developing a strategic direction for the town and this is a key priority for them," said Mr Patterson.

Council is also increasing expenditure on community grants by $90,000 to $650,000 per year.

"Community grants are valuable to the community and council as they encourage organisations and groups to develop their own projects and maintain existing assets with council’s financial assistance."
